Associate Professor in Musculoskeletal Sciences
Location: Lexington, KY
This is a 12-month tenure-eligible faculty (Associate Professor, Regular Title Series) position in the Department of Veterinary Science’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky. The Gluck Equine Research Center has received international recognition for its research dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the horse (https://vetsci.ca.uky.edu/). The mission of the Department of Veterinary Science is to assure the health and viability of animal agriculture through teaching, discovery, research and service. The successful candidate will contribute to the college mission by engaging in research, education, and service activities that address musculoskeletal sciences and both transdisciplinary and translational collaborations fully supportive of One Health initiatives.
The initial appointment will be at the Associate Professor rank, with an anticipated distribution of effort of 85% research, 5% service, and 10% teaching. The appointee will be administratively responsible to the Chair of the Department of Veterinary Science.

Key Responsibilities:
· Establish an internationally recognized research program in musculoskeletal sciences using innovative approaches to investigate, manage, and/or prevent musculoskeletal injuries or disease, including but not limited to the disciplines of orthopedics, rheumatology, immunology, sports medicine, and related fields. Expertise in molecular (targeted and -omic) and cellular biology is highly desirable.
· Conduct interdisciplinary research and scholarly activities to address complex musculoskeletal challenges at the interface of equine, companion animal, human, and/or environmental biomedical variables, with an emphasis on musculoskeletal health, injury prevention, injury or disease therapy, and environmental sustainability. Expertise in equine orthopedic issues and preclinical research models is strongly preferred.
· As a member of the graduate faculty of the university, the appointee will be expected to participate in and contribute to the education and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral trainees.
· Collaborate with other colleges within the University of Kentucky, including but not limited to the College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, College of Dentistry, and College of Nursing, to foster interdisciplinary approaches to address One Health issues and promote collaborative research.
· Work closely with state laboratories, government agencies, and industry partners to address current and emerging musculoskeletal health threats, enhance epidemiological surveillance and monitoring capabilities, and develop strategies to mitigate musculoskeletal health risks to animals and humans.
· Establish and maintain robust relationships with funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Science Foundation (NSF), and health organizations/foundations to secure competitive extramural funding to support discovery biomedical research and student training.
Required qualifications:
· PhD or an equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline is required with advanced academic training and/or research experience in an area pertinent to the musculoskeletal system. DVM (or equivalent) is desirable, but not a requisite for the position.
· Demonstrated expertise and experience in musculoskeletal sciences and health principles, with a focus on equine, companion animals, human, and/or environmental health.
· Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
· Demonstrated ability to attract and maintain extramural research funding (from federal agencies, private foundations, industry, and/or other sources).
· Excellent skills in communication and collaboration, with the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams and engage with diverse backgrounds.
· For consideration at the rank of Associate Professor, a strong record of peer-reviewed scholarly publications, graduate student mentoring, and extramural competitive research grants as independent lead investigator from federal agencies is necessary.
